Ruskin Walk

A contemporary and low-carbon approach to a residential retrofit.

Located on a typical Victorian street, the project represents our approach to extending and upgrading the energy performance of a 1930s house.
The project uses affordable, readily available materials, elevated by careful attention to detail, to create a refined backdrop for relaxed family living.
Materials such as stack bonded grey brick, stainless steel, bottle green linoleum, oak and painted softwood timber are chosen for their economy, robust quality, and ability to harmonise together.
A large picture window projects into the garden, creating a deep sill and window seat.
A central oak joinery element is positioned at the heart of the plan, providing storage, bookshelves, and discreetly housing a ground floor WC. Sliding pocket doors allow the living and dining areas to be separated or connected, creating flexible, adaptable spaces for daily living.
To raise the energy standards of the old house the external walls are insulated internally with breathable cork insulation and finished with a self-colouring lime plaster. Other sustainable features include an air source heat pump and mechanical heat recovery ventilation throughout.
An new solid oak stair rises through the house and brings tactility and warmth to all levels.
