Woodland House

A family home set in the countryside, designed with modular forms and constructed using low-carbon materials.

Our client engaged us to design a sustainable and flexible rural house concept, adaptable for various site locations.
Our approach treats the landscape and building as a unified composition, seamlessly blending interior and exterior spaces into one cohesive experience.
The functions of the house are articulated into a cluster of volumes, each anchored by a rammed earth element that provides utility and thermal mass.
Infilling between the rammed earth elements is a pre-fabricated timber frame, insulated with hemp fibre insulation and rendered both internally and externally with hemp render mixed with local gravel. The volumes are topped with a wild flower green roof and a ground source heat pump fulfils the houses energy requirements.
